Mac users: how to back up your LJ

With all the fuss about LJ layoffs, I know a lot of people are backing up their journals today. But while there are plenty of tools for Windows users to back up their LiveJournals, there are hardly any for the Mac.

Fortunately, this very handy post describes two methods Mac folks can use for LJ backups; you'll need to use the Terminal app, but bryant's instructions are clear and easy to follow. I had no problems running the two packages he suggested, and now I have everything backed up.

Well, everything except this post, that is.

I've been using Unix for years, so having something like Terminal and a Unix core underneath the Mac OS makes me unbelievably happy.

How do you back up LJ on Windows?

The software most people seem to use is called ljarchive. You'll need to download it from Sourceforge, though Sourceforge being what it is, I can't actually tell for sure whether the .exe file you download there is the only file you need, or whether you need some of the other items as well. I'd say start with the .exe, and download other stuff if the installer asks you to.

There is also an online service called LJBook that turns the contents of your LJ into a PDF. Click on the "Create PDF" link on the right side of the page and enter your journal information to get started.

When I got my first Mac that was running Unix as a core (that was 9, wasn't it? It all blends after a while), I ran around quoting (and singing) from Foxtrot: "I have Unix underpants! I have Unix underpants!" :)
