I love winter. Really, I do.

I'm just done with it now. Because after last week's 8" of snow, and the 5" we got yesterday, and the 4" I woke up to this morning, this is what the front garden looks like:



Those tiny brown branches poking up from the snowdrift are the tips of the Knock-out rosebush, a good 5' tall.

Wow. Are you to the roof-shoveling stage? I think we've had this discussion before but I only learned that roof shoveling was necessary within the last couple of years, and I am fascinated by the concept.

We have a gambrel roof, so it's sloped steeply enough that we don't have to worry about shoveling it. Also, it's covered with black asphalt shingles, so assuming there's enough sun, the snow will melt reasonably quickly. (Though the sound of an iceberg calving off the roof and hitting the ground is always a little disturbing.)

We don't have a way of getting up onto our roof, anyhow - a source of continual worry for me. I hate not being able to see what condition the top of our house is in. However, the difficulties of obtaining, transporting, and storing a ladder sufficient to reach the top of a two-story house ... argh. Let's just say I've given the matter a lot of thought over the years, and yet nothing has ever been solved.

In case you decide you actually need to remove the snow in some spots, we have an older Avalanche snow rake <http://www.avalanche-snow.com/index.asp> that can get pretty tall and is rather effective at pulling the snow down.
