Post-"Journey's End" fic recs
A couple of people asked for my list of post-"Journey's End" fics that didn't suck, and I have nothing better to do this evening than compile a rec list (okay, I could go write porn ...), so here you go. It's not a comprehensive list – there may be good ones out there I've missed or forgotten, and there's at least one (
calapine's new story) that I'm going to try to hold off on reading until it's complete, because I hate reading WIPs – so if I've missed something you particularly enjoyed, feel free to tell me about it.
throw your arms over your eyes and greet this brand new day (Ten/Rose)

So, yesterday I bitched about the number of fics in which Rose and dear old Handjob tiptoe around each other for a while and then miraculously fall in love. This falls into that genre, only unlike the rest of its mediocre brethren, it does it well. It's beautifully written, and believably portrays the way the Doctor slowly adapts to his new life, and Rose slowly adapts to her new Doctor.
Forever Is Impossible (and we're still stuck in Norway) (Ten/Rose)
Author:
misscam
misscam is reliably good, and she's in top form with this story, which is more introspection than plot, one of my favorite genres. (Not to mention my favorite way to write my own fic.) Half the story is told in the sort of oblique, roundabout dialogue the Doctor always engages in when forced to discuss his emotions – if more authors learned that he's not the kind of man who says "Rose, we should talk" and then proceeds to monologue about his eternal and undying love, there'd be a hell of a lot more good fic out there.
Peace in our Time (Ten/Rose)

I just found this one tonight. It skirts all the annoying can-Rose-love-her-new-man crap, dives into scenes from their relationship, and feels incredibly true to the characters. It also gave me the image of the Doctor with a pillow on his head, pretending to be a rhino, and don't think I wouldn't kill to see DT do that.
Four Hearts (Ten/Ten/Rose)
Author:
fid_gin
I knew I'd forgotten one fic when I wrote up this list, and reading the kinkmeme reminded me: I forgot the porn. FOR SHAME. Especially because this one is Ten/Ten/Rose, and I am weak for Ten/Ten. And also,
fid_gin writes excellent smut.
All Right (Ten, Donna)
Author:
countrygirl_914
Donna keeps running into the Doctor, whose heartbreak at seeing her again is slowly overwhelmed by the realization that she's turning back into the brilliant companion he once knew. If you are still as upset as I am about what happened to Donna, this fic will cheer you right up.
Reset (Donna)
Author:
fireworkfiasco
I don't think I can summarize this story any better than this excerpt: Donna’s dreams are full of the impossible, though. She’s seen things she can’t begin to believe, and that gives her faith. It's a bittersweet story, but one that's ultimately hopeful as well.
