50 Recipes 2011, #7: rutabaga fries

As my winter CSA share dwindles to a close -- only one more pickup left after Thursday! -- the farm starts distributing rutabagas, which apparently keep in the root cellar longer than turnips, the vegetable they're displacing from the rotation. And I like rutabagas, but there are only so many times I can mash them or roast them with other root veggies before I get kind of bored.

Saveur's website pointed me to this rosemary rutabaga fries recipe, which seemed worth a try. I substituted cumin and thyme, since those seasonings worked better with the rest of the meal, and the fries turned out very well. They're still not exciting, but I think there's only so much one can ask from rutabagas.

Jennifer Saunders asked a lot of a rutabaga in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dq-FX1ced8g , and at 0:50, it delivers!

I remember going shopping with a British friend in college (probably at the Mem Drive Stop & Shop) and she wanted a swede. I told her we called them rutabagas and she said, "Isn't that a type of car? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studebaker)"
