columbina and I have been catless since Mr. Peterson died in January, but not anymore:



These are Ebony and Noir, two one-year-old sisters we got from SPIN, a no-kill shelter in Natick, MA. Ebony's the one with the splotch; Noir is the one with the round-eyed stare of OMG WHAT IS COMING TO KILL ME?!?! This is their Petfinder photo, only because they're busy acclimatizing to their new home in the way of all cats: quietly flipping out underneath a pile of scrapwood in the basement. Once they've settled in, I'll have more photos.

Nice looking kitties! Noir, while a lovely name, sounds a lot like Meeow. I wonder how that'll work out. I envy you having cats. I can't do it here. I have birds who roam the family room. I say "I" because Sean's not big on pets of any kind. I wish you much happiness with your new fambly members.

Thanks! They're on the shit list at the moment, what with Noir ducking under the freezer (we didn't even know there was a space she could use to hide under there!) and Ebony disappearing into a hole in the ceiling we also didn't know we had, and biting the hell out of columbina's arm when he retrieved her. We're leaving them alone for now and hoping they'll be calmer tomorrow.

Yow! I seem to recall hearing that you're supposed to confine them in a single room or two until they adjust to new surroundings. No? It's been an awfully long time since I had a cat, so memory may not necessarily serve... A cat bite! That's scary! How the heck does a cat get on the ceiling?

You can confine them at first, but you don't have to. (And the way our house is set up would make it hard to do that.)

The hole in the ceiling is about a foot above the oil tank. Ebony took a flying leap on top of the tank and then into the hole.

Thanks! Now, if only we could find them -- they apparently emerged from their hiding places last night and dropped into a pocket dimension somewhere, because we can't find them anywhere :(

How come you passed on Schwartz, the third black cat, the one with the big nose?

I hope that's what they have. We're now reasonably certain they're hiding behind the old dishwasher/oven downstairs, and have no way to get to them to even confirm that they're still breathing. Most likely they're just still freaking out and aren't hurt at all, but I'd feel a lot better if we could see them. I'm hoping the increasingly stinky bowl of sardines I've left them near the only exit from their hiding place will entice them to come out.
