Thoughts while watching "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom"

I finally realized why I hate Kate Capshaw's character so much. She's Peri. She's fucking PERI. And she doesn't even have the benefit of Nicola Bryant's nice tits.

I remember seeing that in the theater with an audience of all ages and walks of life, and I don't think I've ever felt a group of people all achieve such instant, visceral, collective hatred for a character so quickly. I swear you could almost smell it. (ETA: And I was at one with them.)

I just routinely pretend it never existed and skip to The Final Crusade. Thank God they cast Karen Allen in the new one.

Apparently, in the new versions of the DVDs, Spielberg and Lucas do some preliminary interview/commentary stuff for each film. Oddly enough, they were perfectly well aware that her character was a problem as written; Speilberg said as much to Lucas. I don't remember the reasoning, precisely, but Lucas wanted a character that was a really sharp contrast with Marian, and he didn't care so much if the audience didn't like her. He didn't realize how much of a drag on the entire movie she would be. Spielberg was aware, but since he was a hired gun, essentially, he did what the producer told him to do. And, in the commentary, he's said that he can't really regret it, since it brought them together. (Capshaw herself has said that she expressed her concerns about being too screamy to Spielberg. And, you know ... for all that she was nonstop screaming, she did in fact get the job done. She just had to scream a lot first. But seriously, you know a character has been badly written when everyone prefers the mostly evil Nazi in the next movie, creepy father-son sex overtones and all.)

...why in the name of sanity would you want THAT on in the background? I mean, about the only thing it would be suitable background for is a campaign of nonstop pillaging.

Yup, that's about what WOW is, a campaign of nonstop pillaging.

Besides, I rather like parts of the film. Capshaw's the only real problem for me.

Spielberg has been very candid about the film over the years - he has also said that he felt the film came out too dark, and that he was going through a bad period personaly (messy divorce, I gather), and didn't realize until later how much it affected the film.
