To alleviate today's grumpiness, I took some flower photos I've been meaning to shoot for at least a week now. Most of them aren't anything special -- just documentation so that I know what blooms when -- but I must say that I am very pleased with this macro of one of the paper daisies in the front planter. My only regret is that I wish I'd framed it just a tiny bit better so that none of the top petals were cut off. Still, it'll do.

Oooh, purrrrty.

I totally failed to get peony and poppy pix b/c it was raining nearly daily the minute both started blooming. Beat up the blossoms something fierce.

I love poppies! Maybe I should find a place to put some in next year ...

Mine are very forgiving; came with the house. 10 years of sitting in an unamended, unmulched bed at the foot of the driveway, fighting with the pampas grass and the weeds, and they just multiply every year. My kind of vegetation!

The only problem with poppies is that you cannot use them in a mixed bouquet. They kill everything else; the sap oozes into the water. They don't even last that long by themselves. So I just don't bother cutting them to bring them in at all.

That's gorgeous! (although your bee icon kinda freaks me out. Bees = scary.)

Aw, I think he's cute! He's just a honeybee having lunch.

Besides, we need to be nice to the bees, since they really are disappearing.

I have a very healthy respect for bees, and I am always nice to them. And I hardly ever run away from them anymore!

(Wasps, however, are another thing.)

There was one on my garden hose the other day. Eventually it flew away, but it freaked me out in the meantime.

Yeah, The Unicorn and the Wasp was extra scary for me. I spent much of the episode ~~hiding behind~~ protecting a sofa cushion.

I know bees are friendly and beneficial and stuff, and are really too busy to bother with me unless I threaten them. Intellectually, I know that. But they share many of the same characteristics as wasps, and therefore, I try to just stay out of their way.

That's nice. I like the contrast between the flower and the dark background.

I had never heard of them until last year, when our CSA offered cut-your-own, but I never had time to get any. When I ran across them at the nursery, I decided to put some in, and now at least I know why they're called paper daisies -- it's amazing how stiff and papery their petals are.

The flowers are all really pretty. I have nothing but a philodendron and an altogether reluctant spider plant.

I want your type of camera.

You know why we can't have a philodendron or a spider plant in this house -- they can't defend themselves.

My camera was not terribly expensive as these things go -- a few hundred bucks, maybe? I don't remember, because I mostly paid for it in gift certificates. But the latest issue of Consumer Reports rates digital cameras in many price ranges, so if you're serious about wanting one, let me know, and I'll copy that article for you.
