Year-end fic meme

I did this meme last year and enjoyed it, so I figured I'd give it another shot this year.

Fic written in 2010:

Six Lessons (G; Anita/Other Dave, River Song, Proper Dave)
Missing scene from "Echoes" (Adult; Ten/River)
Wrong Turn on the Way to Albuquerque (PG; Eleven/Amy)
Clean-Up on Aisle Three (G; Eight, OC)
Within My Reach (G; Martha, Ace, Mickey)
Souvenirs (PG; duplicate Doctor/Rose, Eleven/Rose, Amy/Rory)
The Power of Cheese (Adult; Eleven/River)

... and huh, more kinkmeme stuff than I thought I'd written this year: A Very Serious Story In Which The Doctor Loses His Emo (Eleven/Romana II); Mind Over Matter (Eleven/Albert Einstein); Boxed In (Eleven/Dream Lord); The One Where Eleven Fucks a Football Team (Eleven/many); Cleaning Up (Eleven/Amy); and one I just posted last week, Happy Birthday (Eleven/Romana II, Eleven/River, River/Romana II).

Leitmotif of the year:

I don't know if this is a leitmotif so much as unusual coincidence, but I posted a lot more gen or nearly-gen stuff than usual. I tend not to write much gen mostly because it requires writing plot, which I'm terrible at, but somehow I came up with three totally gen stories, when last year I had none.

Overall Thoughts:

I worry a bit about whether my porn has started to get repetitive, though I suppose given how much of it I've written, that's kind of inevitable. Still, it's something I want to keep an eye on.

I've also found it increasingly hard to concentrate on writing lately, but I suspect that has a lot to do with how busy I've been at work. Not that I don't like being busy, since busy = money, but I also like having enough time to really think through my stories.

My best story of this year:

I like all of them (or they wouldn't have been posted in the first place!), but I think I'm going to go with Wrong Turn on the Way to Albuquerque, because it still makes me laugh whenever I read it.

My favorite story of this year:

The Power of Cheese, because it really feels like Eleven and River to me, and also because I took what sounded like an impossible prompt – cheese! – and made it work. (Or at least I think I made it work, anyway.)

Story of mine most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:

Clean-Up on Aisle Three, underappreciated by Big Finish. Oh well. I had to try.

Most fun story to write:

Tie between The Power of Cheese, for its dialogue, and A Very Serious Story In Which The Doctor Loses His Emo, for plot and dialogue. Writing comedy is hard, but I still enjoy it.

Story with the single sexiest moment:

Cleaning Up. Some of the others are plenty sexy, too, but this one's my runaway winner.

Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:

I nearly answered Boxed In, but let's face it, it's The One Where Eleven Fucks a Football Team. Is it possible to laugh and hang one's head in shame at the same time?

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:

I wouldn't say Six Lessons shifted my perceptions so much as created them, because the characters are barely sketched out in SitL/FotD; I had to extrapolate their personalities from there. By the end I was really sorry I had to say goodbye to Anita.

Hardest story to write:

Happy Birthday. Like pulling teeth at times. There's at least one totally abandoned take on this on my hard drive, and maybe two.

Biggest Disappointment:

Also Happy Birthday, and I realized halfway through why that was: because I was more interested in the Eleven/River-River/Romana relationships than I was in the actual pornography, which is a problem when you're writing a kinkmeme story. I also think the sex scenes might be hard for people to follow. The story was good enough to post, but still doesn't feel quite right to me.

Biggest Surprise:

I thought I hadn't written much fic this year until I compared this year's count (13 stories) to last year's (12 + 3 drabbles). Guess I was wrong!

Most Unintentionally Telling Story:

I don't think there's anything more telling in any of this year's crop than there's been in the past. Virtually every story I write contains a private joke of some kind I put in to amuse myself, but there's no one story that leaps out at me as being more telling than the others.

Story I haven't yet written, but intend to:

Still haven't written "Five Women River Song Isn't," and haven't decided whether it will actually get written. There's a small chunk of it on my hard drive, but I'm not convinced it's any good or could be extended into a story. I might go back and finish that early draft of "Happy Birthday" that was River/Romana I instead of River/Romana II, though, because it seems like River/Romana I is something that really should exist.

Re: 'Happy Birthday' -- I thought that was you! FWIW, I really, really loved that story.

I truly get stories being a bit hard to write, though. I have two that I've been struggling with myself (an Eleven/Martha/Mickey one and a Handy/alt-Martha one) for months now. Some stories are just like that, I guess? Either way, as I said, I really liked 'Happy Birthday' lots. :)

Oooh, somehow I missed 'The Power of Cheese' the first go round (looking at the date stamp, it looks like it was around the time I left my job, so that makes sense). About to check it out. I can't wait!

Ooh, hello, there are several of these that I hadn't read, probably due to not really reading sizeofthatthing; in the case of Boxed In that seems to have been a particularly serious oversight.

The One Where Eleven Fucks A Football Team, though, I know all about, and it remains brilliant.
