Year-end fic meme
Dec. 30th, 2015 08:46 pmNormally, I'd post this on New Year's Eve, but I'll be out much of tomorrow at Star Wars (again) and a lovely dinner, so you get it tonight instead.
( after the cut )
( after the cut )
Since it's been a little while since I last posted, why not have a meme I'm also participating in on Tumblr? I've got time tonight, what the hell. (Tomorrow, of course, it's back to the teaching/wireframing mines.)
Ask me questions about writing.
1. Which is your favorite of the fics you've written for X fandom?
2. Favorite piece overall?
3. Which was the hardest to write, in terms of plot?
4. Which has the most "you" in it, however you'd define that?
5. What is an image/set of images that you're particularly proud of?
6. Idea that you always wanted to write but could never make work?
7. Least favorite plot point/chapter/moment?
8. Favorite plot point/chapter/moment?
9. Favorite character to write?
10. Favorite line or lines of dialogue that you've written
11. If I'm showing off just one of your pieces to someone, which one should it be?
12. What WIPs do you have going now? Are you excited about them?
13. Are there any things that might have happened in any of your stories, but you changed them at the last minute? (So-and-so dies, they don't actually kiss, main character has long extended ballet-based dream sequence, etc.)
14. Would you want to write canon for any of your fandoms (like be hired by showrunner to do an episode)? Which one?
15. Does font matter to you when you're writing a draft?
16. 3 favorite comments ever received on fanfic.
17. Any mean comments? How'd you deal with it? Who laid the smackdown?
18. If you could go back and revise one of your older stories, which would it be?
19. Do you make up scenes at work/on the bus/at the gym? Who are the characters that pop up the most? Do you write them down?
20. Go nuts, and talk about writing.

Year-end fic meme
Dec. 31st, 2011 12:51 pmI've done this for the past couple years, so why not do it again? ( fic meme responses, after the cut )
Year-end fic meme
Dec. 30th, 2010 04:16 pmI did this meme last year and enjoyed it, so I figured I'd give it another shot this year.

I've been meaning to respond to this meme (ganked from
gritsinmisery) since about 9:30 this morning, but this is the first chance I've had to really sit and think about things. It's been that kind of a day.

( Ten questions and answers about my fic, after the cut. )
We all have our own unique talents, but somehow I'd hoped that mine would turn out to be more socially relevant or useful than being able to write a 600-word Pynchon-pastiche crossover between Doctor Who and Gravity's Rainbow.
I don't know where this came from, but it took less than 45 minutes, including the time a couple weeks ago to write Slothrop's song, and I only changed a couple of words in the final editing process. As we say so often around here, the mind is a dark forest.
P.S. If you want to leave a comment -- and I am in no way trolling for comments here, just need to pass along this important information -- please don't reply to the
lifeonmartha entry; reply here instead. We are trying to keep the drabble thread to stories only so that we know when the count hits 1,000.

100 Words on 100 Words
Oct. 13th, 2007 10:00 pmThe latest fic is a series of thirteen 100-word drabbles, and has been remarkably hard to write. Never has the advice “kill your children” been more relevant, or more difficult to follow. I find myself resenting the conjunctions and articles I have to use, because they consume valuable space better filled with nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
I’ve always written compact fiction; the drabbles force even more precision. Still, I like to think of this as an exercise in discipline, rather than an exercise in frustration. And I suppose in about a week, when it’s done, I’ll know whether I’ve succeeded.

Status Report
Jul. 20th, 2007 05:17 pmCurrent fic status: Just over 4,000 words, with only one major scene transition and the last bit of the ending left to go.
Current hatred level for Russell T Davies: High, due to the following factors:
Urge to Kill: Surprisingly low. Maybe it's the nice weather outside.
Current hatred level for Russell T Davies: High, due to the following factors:
- He has given fandom a character whom it is almost impossible to write without emphasizing her Mary Sue-ness.
- He allowed Toby Whithouse to get away with emasculating Sarah Jane in "School Reunion," thereby making a rather important line I've written sound insulting to her when that's not my intention.
- "Gridlock" is on tonight, and though I'll probably watch it out of inertia, it will undoubtedly continue to suck.
Urge to Kill: Surprisingly low. Maybe it's the nice weather outside.
