Thank you so much! I've never really bought into the idea that Rose and the Doctor would have a perfectly normal relationship -- he's just too alien, with hundreds of years of habits he's never going to break.
The "fine print" conversation is one of my favorite bits in the story, too :-)
And I did feel like I had to bring the TARDIS into the story, because the Doctor, half-human or not, would feel lost without her. The deleted scene with the coral doesn't sit right with me for many reasons, not in the least of which is that the TARDIS would be left to die on her own after what (for her) would be an incredibly short lifespan. It's needlessly cruel. It seemed like a better solution to comfort Handy with a bit of the TARDIS that would only live as long as he would.
