Wow, that's pretty radical. There's another side to the use of immigrant labor to harvest cane sugar. I used to clear the workers into the country from places like Trinidad and Jamaica. They were legal. They clamored to be allowed to come every year. The money they made in two months fed their families for the whole year. Now, since protesters demanded the sugar companies pay them more, they no longer come at all. Big Sugar automated the harvesting process, which turned out to be cheaper. It's not necessarily a better method, but it works. And the workers are out of a job. Sometimes, people don't stop to consider both sides of the story. Big Sugar is not a charity. It's a business. They live by the bottom line, same as every other industry. It's not ideal, but it's what it is. I don't think anybody's better off from this action, certainly not the cane cutters.
