End of year fandom meme

Picking this one up from
lizbee.
Your main fandom of the year?
Doctor Who. I'm sure this comes as a shock to everyone.
Your favorite film you watched this year?
Beasts of the Southern Wild. I've never seen anything else like it, and now that it's hit Netflix, I should probably see it again. Close second: The Avengers, which is one of the few movies I've seen where I was ready to go back out to the lobby to buy another ticket the instant the movie ended.
Your favorite book read this year?
Fiction: China Miéville's The Scar, which grabbed me practically from the very first page. People who claim Miéville can't write three-dimensional characters should read this book immediately. (On the other hand, they should skip the last book in the New Crobuzon series, Iron Council, which was a slog and a half primarily because I found the characters so forgettable.)
Very close second: Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl, because I am a sucker for an unreliable narrator, which is practically all I can say without spoiling it.
Nonfiction: The Design of Everyday Things, by Don Norman. I'm slightly ashamed to admit that I'd never read this before, despite what I do for a living. It's very accessible even to people who aren't professional UI designers, and a fascinating look at how many things are badly designed. Its only drawback is that many of the examples feel out of date now. However, it sounds like this is being addressed in a new version due out in 2013, which I'll definitely be buying.
Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?
The problem with this question is that I listened to the most music way back at the beginning of the year, when my giant work-related writing project hadn't yet started (I can't listen to music while writing or editing), so I don't remember much about what I was listening to then. I do remember spending a lot of time listening to Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, Wilco's The Whole Love, and as always, a ton of Spoon and New Pornographers.
Your favorite tv show of the year?
Doctor Who, The Legend of Korra, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Game of Thrones, Once Upon a Time, Elementary, Sherlock. (Yes, fandom, it's possible to like both Holmes adaptations!)
Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
I'm working my way through Community on DVD and enjoying the hell out of it.
Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Like
lizbee said, fandom itself. Yes, I'm fully aware DW has some problematic elements. I am also aware that the show has always had problematic elements, and no, enjoying the show despite these elements does not make me an ill-informed or bad feminist. If you don't like it, stop watching and talking about it already.
Your fandom boyfriend of the year?
I'm picking David Tennant, because DAVID TENNANT. (Even if I kind of wanted to smack his character in the most recent thing of his I saw, True Love.)
Your fandom girlfriend of the year?
River Song! Joan Watson, feel free to join us anytime.
Your biggest squee moment of the year?
These squeeful moments didn't all take place at the same time this year, but I finally got to meet several longtime fandom friends in person:
platypus,
lizbee,
violetisblue, and
viedma.
The most missed of your old fandoms?
A few friends have talked about rewatching old episodes of The X-Files recently, which is making me want to do it, too. Now I just have to find the time!
The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
I'm not sure there are any fandoms I want to get into, simply because I feel a little burnt-out on fandom in general. The closest I've come is following the "elementary" and "elementasquee" tags on Tumblr, but I have such limited patience for the continuing Sherlock vs. Elementary wars that I don't see myself getting ultra-fannish about either show anytime soon.
Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
The second half of DW Series 7, and the 50th anniversary special! I know I shouldn't get my hopes up in case somehow both suck, but I'm so ready for both anyway.
