I'm just not that nice

My tolerance for a wide variety of personalities is really low. I just do not like that many people and the ones I don't like, I really really really don't like. There are a few, on the cusp, but not many and a few extenuating circumstances, but not many. I am just not a loving, accepting person.

Dinner with Harriet was not painful but sure was not enjoyable (except the shrimp was very good). But, I am understanding the rhythm of her annoyances. When she disagrees with something, she pretends she doesn't understand. She added 3 items to the agenda which were covered absolutely and completely at the last meeting. It's just that she does not approve of the decision. Get over it, old lady. But, she had a lovely time and wants to do dinner more often. Her sister is moving here soon, so hopefully, that will prevent many more dinners.

The volleyball people who annoy me, really worked on me this morning. I only said Shut The Fuck Up and Get Out Of The Pool Now, in my head.

Last night, Jim Across The Hall came over with the contents of the package he had received. He did not know what it was for or what to do with it. It was a package of 12 new Hanes Tighty Whities. This morning, he came over with the same package and we had the same conversation. I'm pretty sure he's going to throw them away. "I don't know what they are for!"

Today is the other Jim's birthday and there will be cake at Elbow Coffee. It's special cake - we had it last year - and it's delicious. So I'm looking forward to that.

Then, my plan is to go pick up lunch from downstairs and come back up here and shut the door. Probably I'll get another tighty whities showing but I'm ok with that. I'm done with everyone else.

Love, the Mean Old Bitch in 3402.

The chicken gurlZ have started laying!

###

And I am 90% certain that the constant dull ache in my shoulder is a well-known side effect of statins (and the reason why they have such a bad rap) and 10% certain that it is a mysterious cancer that appeared suddenly out of nowhere & will kill me in six months (so I better clean the Patrizia-torium and finish the novel.)

Since it does not seem to be resolving, I will call the cardiologist on Monday.

People with thyroid conditions seem to be particularly prone to statin side effects & I have Hashimoto's. Not even sure I would call the ache pain—it's more a thereness that never goes away, that I'm always conscious of, & that therefore messes with my efforts to lose consciousness (i.e. fall asleep).

###

Meanwhile, I went to a Schlock office every day last week and am on the schedule every day for the next week.

I hesitate to call this "work"—though I am being paid to go into the office. Mostly, I sit there and try to hide the fact that I'm reading Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil by pretending to do tax case studies. I display dense tracts on the monitors of the computer assigned to me about depreciation & passive income. See? I am studying! I want to be the best little tax preparer you've ever seen!

Sometimes, I answer phones. Sometimes, I make phone calls: Hey, former Schlock client! Don't you want to spend $250 on something it would take you five minutes to do for free-eee-eeee? Sometimes, I do actual tax returns, and those are always fun.

It all reminds me of that time in the first grade when I got busted by my first-grade teacher for reading Tom Sawyer under the table. "Patty! Put that book away and read your primer!" she'd scold.

This is seasonal work. Come April 15, I remind myself, there will be no further call for your services until next January. You are a farmer! Harvest those tax returns while you may!

I make myself as innocuous and invisible as I can. I even let them call me "Pat"! Who gives a shit? I wouldn't recognize most of the other people in these offices if I passed them in the street. What do I care if they recognize me?

###

If I were more gifted at compartmentalization, I'd work on the novel while I'm at the Schlock office.

But doing nothing eight hours a day is exhausting. When I get back to the casa once my shifts are done, all I want to do is throw fuel in my stomach & watch mindless television. So, I'm not writing then.

I'm still working out what I want to do with the next section of the novel, though. Initially, I thought the next section of the novel would be about sex, but ironically, neither real-life Daria nor real-life Flavia was having sex with Brian at the time he died. Of course, what I'm writing is fiction, not real-life.

Anyway, sometime this week, I will be interviewing (and recording!) real-life Daria at some length. Yes, I will be debriefing her about her relationship with Brian. But I also want to know what it felt like to come to the U.S. from Mexico City at age 11, what it feels like to be able to do simultaneous translation, like how do you keep from getting the languages all mixed up in your head?

I feel like I'm having more and more days where I would like to wander off and become an ornamental hermit.

That is probably also a post on its own... This is, thus far, a weekend of feeling very old/turning to dust and blowing away, and general enshittification annoyances.

Beyond that, I have finished the Destiny Astray as far as I'm going to for now. Absolute nightmare, would build again in an instant. Though I suppose I'd much prefer to be able to afford the ridiculously difficult-to-get official version of the kit and build that. (I remain tickled that the not-actually-wrong translated name of the bootleg kit translated back as Heresy of Fate. So I suppose I should be calling it that.)

I will have to get some photos posted because while building it absolutely sucked, it looks gorgeous and absolutely passes the two-foot rule.

I am going to make good on my promise to build a bunch of 30MM kits for the next little bit...

There are no fewer than four gunpla/plamo contests with deadlines in March. One of which I am definitely committed to (Redacted III), another I strongly intend to do (30ML), and the others are if I have a brilliant and fast idea that I can knock out quickly and easily.

I have a lot of other projects I need to get (back) to, but at this point I just need to get myself together to get to the nerd show today and do that. One thing at a time...

(Please go vote in my poll if you haven't.)

Based on the size and the chirps, I'm pretty sure the bird I saw perched on the rooftop structure earlier today was a peregrine falcon. I didn't have anything to take a picture, and I didn't see it fly off to be able to check the silhouette, so I'm only working off what I got from the ground across the street.

It was hard to miss. At least, I found it hard to miss. There wasn't enough noise to drown out the chirps, which were distinctive enough I knew something had to be around. I deliberately stopped a little while to look at it, in case anyone walking by would stop to see what I was looking at, or ask me what I'd noticed. There weren't many people, and of the people that came, neither of them bothered. I don't know what was on their minds.

Five Years today

Five years ago today I fell. I nearly lost my leg. I was in the hospital/care home for months. It was horrible. Care homes are awful. It seemed like I'd be there forever. But there was still hope.

I taught my classes online from my bed. I helped interview for a new professor from that same bed.

And I had THIS community. You made that time better by checking in with me. You sent me gifts. You sent me stories. The Prodigal Son community made this most amazing art out of one of my stories and I took it back and forth to the hospital every time I had to return for more surgeries because I was afraid the care home would lose it and it was precious to me (It's in my office on top of the file cabinet today).

I'm not sure you know how much you meant to me as I learned to walk again. As I went through all this pain (If you want a visual, go look at the pictures Lindsey Vonn has been posting of her leg and external fixator, my leg looked exactly like that). And I feel sad that one of my biggest supporters, [personal profile] spikedluv isn't here to read this. But so many others did so much and more, especially [personal profile] evil_little_dog. It meant everything and I appreciate all of you. Thank you.

I'm doing good. I hike when I can. I'm not in terrible pain for the most part but the leg is weak and the nerve pain I do have is not fun. But I'm here. This is not stopping me.

And today I realized that not only is it a bad day for me two of my favorite celebrities died on the 27th, Leonard Nimoy and Mister Rogers.

In better news...

Tried the new coffee shop in Point Pleasant. this one isn't near the mothman centric stuff. There is one there that I go to that is...okay. I'd love to say let me watch your shop for a weekend and you go to a coffee conference because even McDonalds gets more adventuresome than you. This one had a great menu but too many cold drinks (especially for winter) I liked it but it's out of the way. A student found me there. figures.

AND the on-campus Mennonite coffee shop has mushroom coffee. I was afraid to know how much it was and they named the mixed drink with it the muddy puddle....

Came home to the news of someone I went to school with losing everything when some monster burned ALL of his beehives (he makes his living with the wax/honey etc), 60 hives, tens of thousands of bees, all gone. People suck.

Sigh.

But I did write and since I'm not ready for it to be on AO3 as it's part of a longer work, I'm just putting it here. Wrote it for [personal profile] spikesgirl58's 6 word challenge.

I could not get that toasted uncrustable out of my head so I decided to have it for lunch today after all - or at least try it and put the idea out of my misery.

From freezer - 3 on my toaster - to me. Chef's Fucking Kiss!! It's my new thing. Never again will I eat a raw Uncrustable. Toasted for me from now on and that also solves the problem of I want one, but they are all frozen.

This is big. Very big. This was grape jelly. I think there's a honey one in the bottom of the freezer, that would be maybe even better!!!!

Laundry done and put away. Pockets sewn on two robes that were slated for the bin because their pockets were not useable. They are not really robes - they are long zipper hoodies. Really old but since they are used to walk through the parking garage to the pool, I don't care.

Jim Across The Hall got his haircut and a shave this morning and he was so excited, he rang my doorbell to show me. It does look nice.

It's the other Jim's birthday tomorrow and his girlfriend is baking a cake - it's the same cake he has every year and he brought it to elbow coffee last year and it was soooooooo good. So tomorrow we are having cake!

I used to eat sunflower seeds when I played softball as a kid, and I can’t say I’ve ever eaten them since. For some reason, I was getting advertisements for Smackin’ Sunflower Seeds on Instagram. In that moment, I thought, you know what, sunflower seeds sound kind of good to snack on right now.

I would say in my life I’ve only had regular sunflower seeds, ranch, and BBQ flavored, so when I saw Smackin’s array of flavors, I was certainly intrigued. I am someone who believes variety is the spice of life, so of course I couldn’t choose just one flavor. I went ahead and bought a variety pack that included all their flavors (except the OG Original), and my dad and I gave them all a try.

I let my dad pick the first flavor we tried, and he chose “lemon pepper.” These definitely had a strong flavor, as advertised, and the taste actually reminded me a lot of a steakhouse. The peppery-ness wasn’t overwhelming, and my dad and I gave these ones a 6.5/10.

Up next, we went for a classic: Ranch. The ranch flavor reminded me a lot of a Hidden Valley Ranch seasoning packet, like the kind you mix into dips or salad dressings. Surprisingly, the ranch flavor was very subtle, which is certainly something that ranch never is. You get a Cool Ranch Dorito and that shit is RANCHED UP. In the case of these seeds, I could’ve used more ranch flavor. They were kind of weak, but the flavor that was present was good. These were a 6/10 from both of us.

We switched to a sweet flavor, their Cinnamon Churro. This flavor was actually really nice, it wasn’t just straight cinnamon, it had that nice churro-vanilla sort of flavor. I will say that the flavor wasn’t very long lasting, though. Like it wore off very quickly. The taste, while it lasted, was very nice and not too sweet, with just a little bit of saltiness to have a nice sweet-and-salty factor. This was a 7.5/10 from my dad and a 7/10 from me.

My dad wanted to get the Cheddar Jalapeno out of the way, since he feared it would be really hot and we’re not exactly known for loving spicy stuff. I’m happy to report that while these ones do have a real kick with a heat that lingers just a touch, it has a really nice actual jalapeno flavor and isn’t just hot to be hot. While there’s not so much of the cheddar flavor present, if you’re someone who likes a little bite in their snack, this one would be a great pick for you. I wouldn’t eat a whole bag, but they were pretty tasty. These were a 7/10 from both of us.

Onto Dill Pickle, which was one I was very excited for. Lemme just say, these bad boys were picklelicious. These had a super solid, bold pickle flavor that was very enjoyable and not too acidic, just had that nice dilly briny taste. These ended up being in my top two favorites overall, and we both gave them an 8.5/10.

Over to the Cracked Pepper, I was curious how this would compare to the Lemon Pepper. If you are someone who puts so much pepper on their steak or eggs that people around you are sneezing to high heaven, then this is the flavor for you. These were so peppery, like pretty overwhelmingly so. I honestly didn’t care for them, and gave them a 4/10, but my dad gave them a 6/10.

Next up was the Backyard BBQ. I do love barbecue chips, so I was looking forward to see how these compared flavor-wise. The BBQ was super bold! Just one seed was absolutely packed with BBQ flavor, and it was very tasty! More long-lasting flavor and very strong, these were super good and ended up being another favorite. My dad gave them an 8/10 and I gave them an 8.5/10.

Back to the sweet ones, we tried the Maple Brown Sugar. Like the Cinnamon Churro, they were really nice but not long-lived. They’re a bit subtle, like not a huge amount of maple flavor or anything, but still pretty good. My dad gave them a 7/10 and I went with a 6.5/10. The rating would be a lot higher if the flavor lasted longer or was stronger.

Starting to wrap up our sunflower adventure, Sour Cream and Onion was next. These tasted so classic and recognizable, like if you enjoy sour cream and onion chips, these are for you because they taste absolutely spot on. They honestly reminded me a lot of Philadelphia Cream Cheese Chive and Onion flavor. These were a 7.5/10 from both of us.

The final flavor before trying the mystery flavor was Garlic Parmesan. These were super garlicky, but didn’t offer up a whole lot of parmesan flavor. The garlic really stole the spotlight here, but it was still a tasty flavor, earning it a 7/10 from both of us.

Finally, the mystery flavor! I truly had no idea what to expect. Do you know how DumDums make their mystery flavors? Well, I can only assume that Smackin’ does the same thing, because the mystery flavor tasted exactly like the Cheddar Jalapeno and Ranch mixed together. It was like the Cheddar Jalapeno but less hot, and somehow even better! The mystery flavor earned an 8/10 from both of us.

Well, there you have it! Eleven flavors of sunflower seeds. The only one I didn’t get to try that I would’ve loved to is Cheeseburger! Honestly, these were pretty solid sunflower seeds. It felt kind of nostalgic to eat them, even if they are kind of tedious to get through. I felt like one of those dogs that has a “slow down” bowl because you can’t just plow through them like chips or crackers.

Anyways, if you’re interested in trying some for yourself, I have a 10% off code for you! Yippee!

Which flavor sounds the best to you? Do you eat sunflower seeds often? Let me know in the comments, and have a great day!

I swam. I am laundering. I have a short list of todo's for today.

I added a phone pocket to my swim robe yesterday and added it way too low. Now I need to take it off and try again - moving it up. Pepperage Farm used to have a thin sliced bread that was really good and, apparently, they no longer do or our stores don't carry it. So yesterday I got a package of those thin bagel tops. I tried one toasted this morning. That's a big nope. Maybe not toasted? But, speaking of toasted, in an MLB commercial yesterday, I saw an interview with a player who loves Uncrustables and recommends putting them in the toaster. That's absolutely going to get tied here.

But, probably not today.

I'm meeting Harriet for dinner tonight in the dining room. She wants to go over the agenda for the next Food and Beverage meeting. I'm not sure I can take her for a whole dinner but I guess we will see! Plus, I like to 'do' the dining room once in a while but I don't really have the whatever to initiate a meet so this is the easy way.

I just went down an Instagram rabbit hole and ended up at a crochet sweater pattern. I do not need to make a sweater. I don't even wear sweaters. Ok, I 'saved' it but didn't buy it.

Ok. The laundry is done and now wants to be put away. So Post!

I was woken out of a deep sleep by the cat batting something around near/under my bed at about 2 am. Grrr. This morning I discovered a pingpong ball near the bed, so I promptly stashed it in a basket full of musical instruments (which the girls never use any more) where the cat will never find it. Violet was also woken up by the cat in the early hours and had trouble going back to sleep, so she was not happy this morning.

Sometime during the last couple of days when Violet has been using my computer to write in a Google document, the " and @ keys somehow got reversed. I meant to try to fix it yesterday but I forgot, so last night when she was trying to write and found it was still happening she took the computer to her father to see if he could do something about it, as I was brushing my teeth at the time. For some reason, up until then the problem had not been happening for me, but after my son in law thought he'd fixed it, it had spread to my ongoing Google doc in which I'm writing right now. I was very annoyed by this, but after I'd done a fair amount of poking around on the internet to try to find some help I decided to just try changing the computer's keyboard language. All the information I had found had suggested that to fix this problem you need to switch *to* US English, but my computer was already set to US English so I changed it to Australian English and viola! The problem disappeared. (I checked both in Violet's document and in mine.)
