An op art baby blanket for haineux, his wife, and of course the little baby-to-be.



It may look a little misshapen here, but that's normal; this photo was taken while I was wet-blocking it to straighten it out. It looked positively amoebic when I took it off the needles!

Made in Ella Rae Amity, and my first project knitting with two circular needles. It was easy and lots of fun, though by the end the blanket was so large that each row took a good 25 minutes.

Thank you! I have to say, if it didn't take so long to make the last few rows (and if I could get incredibly long circular needles), I'd totally make an adult-sized version of this blanket.

What you can't quite tell from the picture is that the "black" color is actually a very dark purple, like an even darker version of the color of the border on this page.

Also, the feel is delightful. Very soft and stretchy.

The pattern calls for black, but I thought that looked too stark; dark purple seemed like a better color choice, and should still have sufficient contrast for the young'un to see the stripes.

Your first quote is from The Twilight Zone, and the second is from The Outer Limits, but neither credit sequence I found had this pattern. I wonder if it appeared in a later version of the credits?

Made me think of Time Tunnel, if you've ever seen that one.

You always pick great colors and soft materials (you may recall I road-tested Nathan's while napping during Clare's labor).

I haven't seen Time Tunnel, but based on the images that pop up when I Google it, I can see why the blanket reminds you of it!

I can't take full credit for the yarn choice -- the good folks at Mind's Eye Yarns in Porter Square are always quite helpful finding the right yarn for the project.

Ahem. Now that that's done.

So I write installers for Apple's iLife, and naturally, we pick appropriate code names -- GarageBand Jam Pack 5 "Symphony Orchestra" was codenamed HERRMANN. Most of the team is in Rellingen, Germany, and they were very happy when the builds came in with the correct spelling attached. I just wish I had been clever enough to find a way to hide a recording of the VERTIGO theme on the installer disks.

I remember when this pattern first came out on Knitty and I thought, "Oh thank goodness, this is only like the second cool baby blanket pattern I've seen" (only slightly exaggerating - the other one I really like is called "Octagonal Lace", from Vogue Knitting on the Go: Baby Blankets and is made in a zillion components knitted from the center out. I made it once, with four colors, and probably never will again). ;-)

I know you're not exaggerating about the baby blanket patterns, because I totally agree -- I had a really hard time finding one I liked the first time I made one. I'm glad I found this one this time around; it was perfect for the recipients.

I looked up "Octagonal Lace" online and found it was a bunch of separate octagons, each with its own pinwheel flower. Good lord, I'd never make something that complicated -- I'm impressed that you did!

I showed this photo to columbina and my mother earlier this week (she was unexpectedly in town), and they both adore it. I don't think I'll get tired of looking at it, either.
