nonelvis: (CAT inu is not impressed)

Every year, I gripe about doing my taxes -- not because I object to paying them, but because the process can be so confusing. And every year, Intuit finds some new way to fuck me over, but usually I complain behind f'lock, because almost everything personal I post is locked.

This year, though, I'm posting about this publicly, because they have managed to fuck me over BEFORE I EVEN DOWNLOADED THEIR SOFTWARE. Because it turns out I can't download their software, because the butt-clenchingly expensive TurboTax version I need as the co-owner of an LLC IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE FOR THE MAC, despite having been available for the past couple of years, and despite the Mac's increasing market share.

GO FUCK YOURSELVES SIDEWAYS, INTUIT.

(And while I'm at it: QUICKBOOKS IS A FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT, TOO.)

ETA: Taxes now complete, but of course, there's more to the story.

So, I downloaded the butt-clenchingly expensive software to [livejournal.com profile] columbina's netbook, and very quickly discovered that there was no obvious way to file my personal taxes with it -- it was very clearly designed for people who needed to file their business' taxes. Which would be fine if my business' accountant had not already done our taxes, meaning this product was fucking useless to me.

I logged into Intuit's live chat, and eventually got to talk to some less-than-clueful tech support. It took a good three go-rounds with him to confirm that yes, even though TurboTax's website says pretty much everywhere that if you have a multi-owner LLC, you must use their business product, if you want to file your personal taxes, you have to use an entirely separate product. Which is information Intuit does not make obvious, that's for damned sure, because now that I know to look for it, the only places I've found it have been in microscopic type or buried deep in the sidebar of a copy-heavy page.

The one good thing they did do was offer me a free download of the tax software I did need, and of course I'm getting a refund on the software I didn't. But sweet sparkly Tinkerbell Jesus, THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN SO HARD.

(And then, of course, the software tried to make me fill out a Schedule C. SO MUCH FAIL, TURBOTAX. Definitely looking into other options next year.)
