Server-side includes on a machine where you can't make useful calls back to the root directory, thereby requiring an SSI file at every goddamned level of your website? ARE TOTALLY USELESS.

That is all.

(Not grumpy at all about having to rip out the nav and completely re-upload the Mystery Hunt files, why do you ask?)

ETA: I have a workaround. A very stupid workaround, but at least it's less stupid than multiple copies of the files, and won't require re-coding every page.

Wait, so you can't do a call in the form /root/subroot/howdyfile.txt (or whatever)?

How on earth is that even possible?
