Server-side includes on a machine where you can't make useful calls back to the root directory, thereby requiring an SSI file at every goddamned level of your website? ARE TOTALLY USELESS.

That is all.

(Not grumpy at all about having to rip out the nav and completely re-upload the Mystery Hunt files, why do you ask?)

ETA: I have a workaround. A very stupid workaround, but at least it's less stupid than multiple copies of the files, and won't require re-coding every page.

Wait, so you can't do a call in the form /root/subroot/howdyfile.txt (or whatever)?

It is when you're on web.mit.edu, which uses AFS. I don't know if the source of the problem is web.mit.edu's configuration or something within AFS itself, but I did try an absolute pathname of the form /afs/athena.mit.edu/activity/p/puzzle/www/08/, and it didn't work. I ended up having to explicitly state the server name in the path.

What I'd really like to do is get the SSI files to use internal logic so that each puzzle's nav displays its parent location as the "active" nav item, but I fear that's completely impossible. (This isn't just a matter of echoing the local directory to the screen -- I have graphical nav buttons, so the right one would need to be highlighted.)
