I took advantage of the tax holiday in Massachusetts this weekend and bought myself a shiny, happy little iPhone. (Its official name for iTunes syncing purposes is, in fact, Happy Little iPhone, much as the iPod is Happy Little iPod.)

It is so unbelievably cute I want to lick it. It is so beautifully designed and perfectly intuitive that I want to cry. All user interfaces should be this intelligent. I cannot believe I suffered through Symbian for a year and thought it was mostly fine, and suffered through whatever the hell Ericsson was using and thought that wasn't so bad either. Both of those are like Windows 3.1 compared to the iPhone. Even the flat screen doesn't bother me, and that was the one thing I was worried about, because I like tactile feedback to confirm I've pressed a key; the iPhone provides more than enough confirmation feedback visually.

I've set it up to talk to my Yahoo! Mail account and one of my GMail accounts (I'm still not using Apple Mail, or it would work there, too); it's connected to the home wireless network; I've transferred over a wallpaper; and most important, I have my custom ringtone back, thanks to a nice little piece of conversion freeware. Sure, it's only available in French ... but hey, I speak French, so no problem there.

(Now that I've said all this, watch, I'll have one of the 2-3% of iPhones that appear to have defective chips affecting 3G access. But for now, I'm in love.)

Is it useful even if you don't have Apple TV? I'm not sure I need the iTunes fanciness, but I'm willing to be convinced otherwise.

Really? Having your whole iTunes library available to play on your computer right there not something you want?

Well, for one thing, my iTunes library is much bigger than will fit on my iPhone and allow me space to add video and apps! I have 12Gb of just music, and even the 16Gb iPhone really has only about 14Gb free. I have only put about 8Gb of my music on the phone.

It's always good to have completely fulfilled gadget love. I feel the same way about my Nikon D70.

I'm quite fond of my AT&T Tilt (a Windows Mobile device, granted). It has lots of buttons. I like buttons.

I really, really thought I'd want buttons, but the iPhone UI makes it so obvious when you've clicked something that it hasn't been a problem so far. The keyboard alone has been a joy to use.

I've found that I use the touchscreen on my Tilt for virtually everything but the one time when I do miss buttons is when I'm dialing a phone number. I can pop out the keyboard and use it ... but it's a little awkward for dialing. Anyway, it's not a big deal, and I love the device overall.

I think I'd be interested in an iPhone if the storage capacity was bigger -- I would love to have ONE device. I did merge my PDA and phone with the Tilt, but I still have the separate iPod (30 gig).

A larger iPhone would be nice. I have a 40Gb iPod, and though it's not full, I could clearly use more than the 16Gb the iPhone comes with.

I wish I could justify buying an iPhone. I have a very basic pay-as-you-go Virgin Mobile cell, because I basically call one person: my husband. iPhones are expensive to use here. I've thought about getting an iPod Touch, though.

I've heard bad things about the Canadian cell carrier (Rogers?) -- I think it was that their plans were expensive, and management was a bunch of assholes. Or something like that.

Yeah, pretty much. The service is so expensive, it's unreal.

But I find that cell service in Canada is stupidly expensive, anyway.
