I've been meaning to respond to this meme (ganked from
gritsinmisery) since about 9:30 this morning, but this is the first chance I've had to really sit and think about things. It's been that kind of a day.
1.Your favourite story?
Aw, this is an impossible question. Even the stories I've written that will never be my favorites all have at least some element that I love unconditionally, and after all, if I don't like something I've written, it never gets posted in the first place.
If I have to choose ... well, I can't really, because it's a tie between Unpacking and You That Way; We This Way. These stories share a lot of similarities in basic structure and concept, though as I told
platypus when I sent her the latter story, I tried very hard to keep it from turning into "Unpacking II: I Think We're Going to Need a Bigger Box." (Even if both stories do describe some very important boxes.)
There's something about the mix of angst, humor, and sex that hits me just the right way in those two stories, but what may really set them apart from the others for me is that they both provide a sense of closure I felt the show lacked. This is probably why I've never felt the need to write any other post-"Doomsday" or post-"Journey's End" stories; I wrote the stories I wanted to tell, closed the necessary boxes, and I'm done with them now.
2. Your least favourite story?
You Say Potato, I Say ... should have been much funnier than it was. Oh well.
3. Your longest story?
Leap in the Dark, aka 8,200 WORDS OF HELL. This is the longest story I've ever written, period, including original fiction. It just kept going, and going, and going, and I thought I was going to die before I ever finished it.
4. Your shortest story?
All the drabbles I wrote for the
lifeonmartha 1,000 Drabbles of Awesome project are exactly 100 words. But technically, the shortest fic I've written has never been posted anywhere other than the kinkmeme, and was for the prompt Ten/Frank the Goat:
"That was great," said Frank the Goat, blowing the Doctor a kiss as he clip-clopped down the TARDIS gangplank, "but you're no Brad Fitzpatrick."
Don't worry, I'm well aware there's something wrong with me.
5. Your strangest story?
The Doctor Who/Sandman crossover fic I wrote, Heartbeats, is deliberately strange, because so much of it takes place in Delirium's psychedelic realm. I still think Delirium's realm is best depicted through artwork and not language, but I kept pushing on the story to make it more and more surreal, and I think I mostly accomplished what I set out to do.
6. Your most unpleasant story?
How Do Porcupines Mate?, the Doctor/Master spiky cocks story from the kinkmeme. I don't know why I picked this prompt, I don't know how I pulled some of the imagery out of my brain, and I'm not sure I want to know ... especially because I like this story a lot.
7. The story that surprised you most with its reception?
That's easy -- it's The Right Doctor, the Six/Donna piece I wrote for the kinkmeme. I am still mystified (and maybe even a little weirded out) by the number of Six fanciers out there, much less Six/Donna fanciers. (I love you people! Seriously! I just don't fully understand you.)
8. Your funniest story?
Are You Sure? cracks me up so hard. I hate that goddamned cliché, and I wanted to nail it to the wall. I succeeded enough to please myself, anyway.
9. Your most angst-ridden story?
It's no secret that I love writing angst, but for pure, angst-ridden punch in a short space, I think Forgive Us Our Sins is the winner. Nine + Gaius Baltar + genocide regret = angst, angst, angst.
10. Your most smutty story?
If you set aside everything I've done for the kinkmeme, the smut-tastic winner is probably The Real Thing, the Ten/Donna/Jack PWP. I've written other PWPs before, but this one is the filthiest of them all.
