I futzed with the camera settings as best I could, and worked a little Photoshop magic on this, but alas, it's still semi-crappy. Still, you'll get the idea.
I can't tell from the exif on flickr what ISO you were using, but I'd suggest a longer exposure, maybe doing a series in whatever increments the camera allows from 1s to 2.5s or so. You might have to go into some kind of night mode, or even night mode with long exposue enabled elsewhere in the settings if I remember Canons correctly, to access speeds slower than one second (or maybe not, if shutter priority mode allows access to the full range). Okay, I'll stop now :).
I think I was using ISO 800. In fact, I'm pretty sure I was, because I tried the slowest speed I could first, assuming it would help, but it actually looked terrible -- so I kept moving the speed up until I settled on 800.
I'll have to go look up how the night mode works (I tried it briefly, but things looked like ass with or without the flash) and figure out how to muck with the settings to increase the exposure level.
It doesn't help that it was so windy here today that the candle kept blowing out and what little flame there was flickered wildly. Hopefully tomorrow's weather will be calmer.
Looks great!! The glyph for the eyes reminds me of how South Park conveys extremes of expression. My first thought, no lie, was, "Oh my god they killed Kenny's Pumpkin!"
