Eleven years after the first Harry Potter book was released, io9.com* discovers there is Dumbledore slashfic.

*Admittedly, io9 hasn't been around more than a year, but COME ON.

What is this "fan fiction" you speak of? I have never heard of such a thing!

Wat.

And all the commenters too like "OMG this is weird! I have never heard of this!" Looooong before I ever read or wrote fic, I knew that it like, existed, and that goes for slash as well. How is this news to people who would be reading a sci fi magazine?

When I started reading and then writing fic myself, I had to very patiently explain to the Hubs that not all fic is slash. In his mind, they were one and the same. And he's very much not someone who Moves in These Circles and even he had heard so much about slash (and weird pairings) that he thought that's what all fanfic was!

I thought the tone of the piece was kind of strange -- Annalee totally knows about slash, duh. I don't read io9 often enough to know what she thinks of her readership, though? I mean, it does seem like some of the commenters were like, "WTF?" and some were "ho hum" -- so perhaps she wasn't sure which way they'd take it.

I had the impression from something she twittered a week or two ago that she just sort of felt like writing a column about Dumbledore slash, though. :)

my friends run a pop culture website - popgurls.com. Last month they ran an interview with Misha Collins (http://www.popgurls.com/article_show.php3?id=684), who plays Castiel on Supernatural. My hands down favorite question was:

In a lot of interviews, I've seen people ask if you've been prepared for the Supernatural fan response. In a recent Q&A with The CW, when asked about the fandom, you said, "I'm ready." Let's see how true that is..."If you had to pick, which name for a LiveJournal community would you prefer: Castiel/Dean: Touched by an Angel, or to borrow Dean's line: Castiel/Dean: Groped by an Angel.

Groped?

Groped.

Well. Both of those have homoerotic overtones...

Welcome to the Supernatural fandom.

(laughs) I think that I would go full-bore with "Groped by an Angel" instead of tiptoeing around the issue. I think that might elicit more humorous threads. Why not? Go all out.

heh. You should have SEEN all the teen girls going nuts about how inAPPROPRIATE such a QUESTION is for their precious Misha! Hee. I guess they don't read livejounral.

I love my friend amy.

I must confess, one of the things I love about the Ten/alt!Ten/Rose OT3 in fic is that it definitely separates the, er, men from the boys as far as one's first thought on the threesome being "OMG SHOCKING! *clutch pearls*" or "OMG YES PLZ!!! WITH A SIDE OF YES PLZ!!!"

I definitely like Misha's reaction to that question. It sort of beats the pants off of (omg again yes plz) David Tennant's "WHO PORN?!?" reaction. As hilarious as that was to behold.

The "OMG, porn?" reaction from David prompted the urge to smother him in my chest and prevent him from ever having to hear about such a repulsive thing ever again.

::blames that response on the NyQuil::

Sooooo wonderful! Loved the whole thing, really -- the group therapy with the hosts was also pretty funny.

That "Doctor Who Porn?!?" icon was made from that actual moment. It was from his second appearance on the Friday Night Project and the poor man had smutfic read aloud to him (Doctor/Martha was it? Doctor/Martha/Jack? I can't remember). He strikes me as someone very much understanding of oldschool fandom but not really quite grokking fandom in the age of the internet and all that has brought with it.

Either which way? Hilarious.

he really shouldn't venture into questions about Harry Potter online fandom, then. He might never recover. Poor sheltered yet uberhot man that he is.

Best reaction ever to the discovery of slash came from Paul Gross, I think, who was informed about it in during an interview about taking over production for a new season of Due South. Said interviewer then went and found some for him. He promptly laughed himself sick, said that if the fans had managed to find that much in the original series, that they'd positively wet themselves over the new one, especially since the new guy was really good looking. He then went and essentially wrote it into the text, getting about as close as he could without actually being obvious about it. (The behind the scenes stuff is very ... illuminating. Especially the bits where they start humping against the wall while in character.) Eventually, they ride off into the permafrost together to end the series.
