I think the vast quantities of rain we got last week took their toll on the cucumber vines, which were small and shriveled when I checked on them this afternoon, but there were still enough cukes that I was clearly going to have to make pickles:

I've filled a bag of weeds, temporarily beaten the ground ivy and bindweed into submission, and laid down three bags of bark nugget mulch, which is in chunks too large for the ground ivy to gain a foothold. TOO BAD FOR IT. Tomorrow: build a trellis for the cucumbers and plant a few more peas.

BUT! That is not the important thing about the garden today. The important thing is that the garden has produced the first wee tomatoes of the season: Juliets, aka miniature plum tomatoes. They are about as big as my pinky nail right now. I also spotted a baby Jet Star.

Fresh, homegrown tomatoes. There is truly nothing better about summer.

To alleviate today's grumpiness, I took some flower photos I've been meaning to shoot for at least a week now. Most of them aren't anything special -- just documentation so that I know what blooms when -- but I must say that I am very pleased with this macro of one of the paper daisies in the front planter. My only regret is that I wish I'd framed it just a tiny bit better so that none of the top petals were cut off. Still, it'll do.

Despite two straight nights of insomnia, I finally got off my tired, lazy ass to plant the vegetable garden today. All the seedlings are in the ground; the tomatoes are neatly labeled so I know what's what; and everything, including the tree peony, got a nice, long drink of fish fertilizer. (It's stinky, but effective.)

Those three sets of spindly shoots at right? Garlic!

I've never sprouted garlic before (well, not deliberately, that is), and I'm really curious to see how this experiment turns out. It's growing pretty fast, considering that I just planted it last week. The fronds at upper left are garlic chives given to me by [livejournal.com profile] columbina's boss. Yes, it's one giant ceramic pot of garlicky goodness.

I am strangely crabby today but will try to put that aside in favor of reporting back on how Passover dinner went, which is to say, very well.

But let's be honest: you probably just want to know how the tiramatzah turned out. )

You may recall that last Thursday, we got hammered with about 8" of snow. We were scheduled for a nor'easter today, but last night boston.com reported most of the storm was going to miss Boston, leaving us with only an extra 3-4" of snow. And while I'm aware that weather forecasts can change at the drop of a hat, usually a forecast from less than 12 hours before the storm is supposed to start is reasonably accurate, right?

Yeah, I had plenty of time to think about that while shoveling another 8"-12" off the sidewalk this morning.

I cleared out the garden this morning. All that's left to do is pull up the basil plants, and purée and freeze the leaves, but I am too lazy to do that today. It's not going to get quite cold enough to freeze overnight this week anyway, so I can take care of the basil next weekend.

There was still a fair amount of produce outside, even though it's early November.

Cherry and grape tomatoes #3Tonight we ate the last of the cherry tomatoes. Well, technically speaking, there are still plenty of green ones out there, and we're experiencing such a warm spell that theoretically they might yet ripen, but I'm going to take down all the tomato plants this weekend anyway. The second crop of peas is still going strong, but I think the peppers are finally slowing down enough for me to pull the plants and either make a vat of green salsa with the jalapeños and green tomatoes, or chop and freeze everything.

The cats have nothing to do with the garden, but I didn't feel like making two entries to post all the photos. )

I didn't really expect to have more garden photos this late in the year, but just before we left on vacation last week, I took a few shots of the morning glories, as well as the bees enjoying the giant rudbeckia.

The Garden Madness entries may be coming to a close soon, since pretty much everything is in bloom or has already bloomed. The vegetable patch is going strong -- I pulled three cucumbers, 12 cherry tomatoes, and a pile of sugar snap peas out of it today. There are also a number of large green tomatoes I expect to be ripe within a couple of weeks.

The tomatoes and cucumbers went into tonight's dinner, panzanella. Almost everything in the panzanella was locally grown or made: my Italian and African blue basil, the extra tomato grown in Hopkinton, the CSA scallions, fresh mozzarella from Vermont, and bread from the bakery just down the street from where one of my business partners lives. The only non-local ingredient (other than the olive oil, vinegar, salt, and pepper) was some pancetta, because virtually everything tastes better with bacon.

I took a short break today from the HTML hell that is my life to take a few photos before some of the blooms I most wanted to capture disappeared entirely.

Garden update, now with bonus snail action! (Well, not action, per se -- they are snails, after all -- but you get the idea.) )

The new camera has arrived! To celebrate, I took a few more garden shots.

With the frost-free date (Memorial Day) rapidly approaching, the annual Garden Madness has struck the Boston area. You can't go near a nursery on a weekend without being stuck in a traffic jam. At 9:45am on Saturday, the parking lot at the Winchester Mahoney's was nearly full, and by the time I left, about an hour later, people looked like they were ready to knife each other for a parking spot.

I turned over the vegetable garden and planted pea, radish, and carrot seeds last weekend, but since I plan to put in most of the vegetables, herbs, and flowers next weekend, I had no choice but to weed the back garden. When we bought this house in 2000, the back garden was a tangled mix of Japanese knotweed and various ivies, but after clearing all that away, I planted tons of herbs and flowers, giving us a beautiful (and largely edible) garden perched on top of an old stone wall. Since then, I've let some of the flowers and other plants re-seed themselves, which seemed like a good idea at the time. Sadly, I know better now. But! The herb garden is still in pretty decent shape, about 75% self-maintaining (yay) and, after today, cleared out and ready for planting.

More garden madness, and even some photos, after the cut. )
